Chester Cathedral
Distance: 8.9 miles
Chester Cathedral stands on the site of a 10th Century Saxon church, dedicated to St. Werburgh. In 1092 it became a Benedictine Abbey, and a new church was built in the Norman style, parts of which can still be seen. This church was rebuilt from about 1250 onwards in the Gothic style, a process which took about 250 years, resulting in the building we see today. Due to the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, the Abbey was closed in 1540, but in 1541 it became the Cathedral of the newly-created Diocese of Chester.
Make sure you pay a visit to this 'must see attraction' that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Cathedral is a truly magnificent building and one that boasts the most complete Medieval monastic complex still standing in the UK.
