It’s National Picnic Week and with the start of summer, we are all ready to pack up our picnic baskets and head off somewhere sunny and scenic to eat our lunch.

But, what makes the perfect picnic? Read on to see our top tips on quick and healthy snacks, ready to grace any field strewn tablecloth.

Sandwiches

A picnic just isn’t a picnic without a sandwich or two.  Whatever your favourite filling, don’t go all confusing with flavours. Just stick to tried and tested ingredients. You have lots more to put in your basket yet. For those that fancy a meat treat, how about a ham or a chicken salad? A great combination and one that boosts your energy for those fun filled hours ahead. If that’s not your bread and butter, then pack a round or two of egg and cress or cheese and tomato. The basic ones are normally the best, the healthiest and most appreciated by all the family.

With regards to bread type, again the world is your oyster but try to stick to what you and your family normally go for, to avoid any unhappiness. Brown bread is often seen as a healthier option than white, but granary and multi grain are also good alternatives, if you do wish to mix it up.

Whatever you choose, make this picnic memorable.

Hummus and carrots

This Greek food is increasingly popular for picnics and it’s no surprise why, as it’s a snack that’s not only delicious but super healthy too. Once seen as an aloof food, it is now sold in supermarket chains all around the country and people can’t seem to get enough of it. A light alternative if you’re not feeling keen for stodgy sandwiches, vegan and vegetarian friendly hummus is the perfect dip for a lot of different fruit and salads. If you’re not in the mood for carrots, why not try slices of cucumber, peppers or even a cream cracker? Delicious…

Cheese and crackers

Some people may see cheese as a fatty food but we are going to embrace it for its high levels of calcium and how it contributes to a balanced diet. Still worried about unhealthiness? Think again as you choose thin rye crispbreads or whole wheat crackers and light cheeses like feta or grilled halloumi. The perfect combination and one that will have you licking your lips in anticipation. Ideal for National Picnic Week and for basking with in the British sunshine.

Scotch eggs

Scotch eggs don’t have to be unhealthy. You may think that breadcrumbs, eggs and sausage meat is not the ideal family food, if you want to keep your figure or cut down on unnecessary fats. However, think of the positives! The zinc in the ground pork breadcrumb is known to benefit your bone structure and immune system, while thiamin, found in sausage meat, helps maintain healthy muscle and nerve tissue and eggs are a very good source of inexpensive, high quality protein. Easy to pack and simple to make, a scotch egg can be the perfect centrepiece to any picnic!

Fruit salad

Top off your amazing picnic with a refreshingly colourful fruit salad. The best thing is you can pick or select your favourite fruits and they’ll all taste great whatever combination you choose. A fantastic way to boost your vitamins and to achieve your 5 a day intake. Why not add some Greek yoghurt and honey on top, a delicious accompaniment to your dessert? Despite it being the end of your picnic, this pudding will guarantee you plenty of smiles for the rest of your summer day, whatever you choose to do.
