The Cheshire Course

When do you plan to visit us?

Leading to a dramatic finish, the Cheshire golf course offers many challenges along the way with natural hazards to test your golfing skills.

Situated at the back of the estate, the Cheshire golf course has beautiful views across the estate and the Welsh hills beyond. The bunkers have been designed to flow with the natural contours of the landscape; you will need a sharp swing to keep out of them all!

If you have a competitive streak we recommend you take a longest drive from the 9th hole and nearest the pin at the 15th hole.

As you get towards the end of your game, the 16th and 17th lead you to the 18th hole set upon a cliff overlooking the full estate.

An average fourball can expect to complete the Cheshire course in 4 ½ hours.

The Cheshire Course

Hole 1

Par 3

S.I. 17/17

Our Golf Professional tip: “An accurate shot between two oak trees is required for a tough opening shot on the first hole. The green slopes from back to front so, if you are undecided on your club selection, choose the longer one.

Hole 2

Par 5

S.I. 7/2

This par 5 green is heavily guarded by bunkers to within 40 yards. The safe option would be to lay up short, unless you can feed the ball through the narrow entrance to a long green.

Our Golf Professional tip: “A generous fairway for your first drive,  but the right-hand fairway bunker must be avoided. Then try to leave 60- 100 yards for your third shot into one of the bigger greens on the course.  The green side bunkers are deep, so keep clear of them!

Hole 3

Par 4

S.I. 9/6

This hole requires a straight tee shot with a water hazard on the left-hand side. It’s best to drive the ball to the right side of the fairway, keeping away from the water and leaving a clear shot to the green.

Our Golf Professional tip: “The smart play from the tee is to leave yourself short of the water hazard on the left. Double-check your yardage for an accurate second shot, ensuring you can carry the green side bunkers.  Enjoy the view.

Hole 4

Par 4

S.I. 15/14

The best strategy on this hole would be to keep to the left side of the fairway, opening up the green and avoiding the penalising fairway bunker on the right.

Our Golf Professional tip: “The longer hitters can get close to the green with a helping wind. However, the best strategy is to avoid the fairway bunkers, leaving a simple shot into the green, No stress!

Hole 5

Par 4

S.I. 3/4

Well situated bunkers make this a very narrow fairway. If you can carry the bunkers on the left, the fairway opens up.

Our Golf Professional tip: “One of the tighter tee shots on the front 9.  Play the club that gives you the best chance to hit the fairway, giving you the opportunity to hit this difficult par 4 in two. Beware, the second shot plays more uphill than it looks so choose your club wisely.

Hole 6

Par 5

S.I. 5/9

The closer the drive is to the bunker the more it opens up the fairway for the second shot. To have a clear shot to the green, the second shot needs to avoid the oak tree situated 73 yards from the green on the left half of the fairway.

Our Golf Professional tip: “A complicated par 5, so a tee shot up the right hand side will leave you the options of, whether to challenge the tree on the left side of the fairway, 75 yards from the green,or to lay up leaving a third shot of 150 yards., The water behind the green is not really in play unless a huge clubbing error has occurred!

Hole 7

Par 4

S.I. 13/16

This hole slopes downhill all the way to the green. A shot that lands short of the green will tend to bounce forward in dry conditions. The green slopes towards the fairway allowing the ball to stop quicker if it hits the green.

Our Golf Professional tip: “To leave the easiestt second shot , the left-hand side of the fairway is the best option, avoiding the bunkers and water hazard on the right. The fairway slopes down to the green so the ball tends to run on if played short. However, the ball will hold if you pitch on the green.

Hole 8

Par 3

S.I. 11/8

Our Golf Professional tip: “A long difficult par 3, which always plays 10 yards further than the distance shown, from all the tees.  At all costs , avoid the bunker guarding the left side of the green. The green slopes back to front which helps the long shot from running too far.

Hole 9

Par 4

S.I. 1/12

A risk and reward tee shot. A drive past the bunkers will give you chance of reaching the green on this long hole. Anything short of, or in the bunkers will make it very hard to reach the green in two.

Our Golf Professional tip: “A very strong par 4, with the best drive finishing on the right side of the fairway, missing the bunkers on the left-hand side. This is the best chance of reaching the green in two. Beware, over the green is no good as the HA HA awaits an approach shot, that is too long.

Hole 10

Par 4

S.I. 16/5

The ideal tee shot should be played down the right-hand side. A well-guarded green with a narrow entry requires a soft landing second shot.

Our Golf Professional tip: “Any shot left off the tee will probably result in a bogey, so the right side of the fairway will leave an open shot to the green. The second shot must be long enough to carry the green side bunkers,  so check your yardage, and ideally leave an uphill putt.

Hole 11

Par 5

S.I. 6/11

This tee shot requires a slight draw. If the drive is long enough, you may be able to get over the ditch in two, leaving yourself with a maximum of 100 yards for the third. A lay up short of the ditch will leave approximately 150 yards for the third shot.

Our Golf Professional tip: “A draw from the tee is required to hit the middle of the fairway. The second shot will give you two options. To try to carry the HA HA and leave a simple chip shot for a birdie, or to lay up short of the ditch leaving about 150 yards to the green. A ball landing short of the green normally runs forward.

Hole 12

Par 4

S.I. 4/1

A tee shot to the left-hand side of the fairway will be more beneficial on this hole, taking the oak tree out of play with the second shot. The ball will bounce to the left if it lands short of the green.

Our Golf Professional tip: “A real gem of a hole. With the bunker on the left and the tree on the right by the water hazard, an accurate tee shot is required. The second shot needs to be precise, as there is water on the left of the green. A shot landing short should kick left and forward towards the green.

Hole 13

Par 4

S.I. 8/7

A short but narrow hole. A tee shot between the trees on either side of the fairway will leave you with an uphill second shot. A tee shot short of the trees will leave a hindered second. When playing into the green, check if the pin is front or back, as it’s hard to see from the fairway.

Our Golf Professional tip: “The longer hitter should be able to carry the trees, but the not-so-long will need to thread their tee shot between them. Being uphill the second plays at least 5 yards longer than the yardage, but it is essential to try to leave the ball below the hole, as the green slopes severely back to front.

Hole 14

Par 5

S.I. 10/13

Long hitters can be rewarded here on this par 5 that can be reached in 2. The elevated green is well protected by bunkers making it hard to hit from a distance.

Our Golf Professional tip: “The uphill par 5 is reachable for some players. However, if it is a three-shot hole, play short of the deep bunkers guarding the green. Pay extra attention to the third shot as the green is above you. The green has many subtle breaks, so take care!

Hole 15

Par 3

S.I. 18/18

Our Golf Professional tip: “Club selection is vital, and you may not feel the wind as the trees protect the hole. Anything short will find the bunker,  and a tough chip awaits if you are long. Hit the green and there is a good chance of a birdie.

Hole 16

Par 4

S.I. 2/3

With each side of the fairway lined by trees, this hole requires one of the straightest tee shots on the course to a fairway that slopes uphill towards the green. The second shot is played into a blind green with all the danger to the right and back.

Our Golf Professional tip: “Take 4 and run!!!  A long iron to avoid the trees left and right is important. The second shot is blind up the hill, so plays longer than you think. Also, try to keep the ball on the left side to have a chance of a par.

Hole 17

Par 3

S.I. 12/10

Our Golf Professional tip: “This is a beautiful par three to look at, with the tall pines surrounding the green. A long narrow green with two bunkers at the entrance, so a straight tee shot is required. Be prepared for a long putt.

Hole 18

Par 4

S.I. 14/15

With the best views over the estate, the 18th tee shot is played from an elevated tee. This scenic hole requires an accurate tee shot between the bunkers or short of them.

Our Golf Professional tip: “Two well-placed bunkers in the fairway are to be avoided. A tee shot short of these will leave a shot of about 150 yards to the green. If you are feeling brave try to squeeze past the bunkers leaving a short pitch to the green. Playing safe is the best option, as there is Out Of Bounds  on the right  of the fairway  and behind the green.
