The Nicklaus Course

When do you plan to visit us?

Famously designed by the great Jack Nicklaus and son Steve, the Nicklaus golf course at Carden Park is a must for all golfing enthusiasts.

A picturesque start at the first hole awaits. Located next to the onsite vineyard and offering beautiful views of the Welsh hills, your game leads you around the front of the Cheshire country estate.

Beware: there are many strategic moves required to avoid the hazards along the way during your golf game. The double option holes of the 7th and the 15th offer a choice of fairways from which to approach the green.

A longest drive competition is recommended from the 4th hole with the nearest the pin best taken on the 16th hole.

Your game is almost complete when you play in front of the full hotel on the 17th. Can you hold your nerve?

An average fourball can expect to complete the Nicklaus course in 4 ¾ hours.

The Nicklaus Course

Hole 1

Par 4

S.I. 8

Our Golf Professional tip: “A right to left tee shot on the first, using the far right-hand bunker as the starting point is the ideal line. Longer hitters may want to carry the trees to shorten the second shot. The best place to hit the second shot is on the left side of the green and slightly short of the flag, leaving an uphill putt.”

Hole 2

Par 4

S.I. 18

Our Golf Professional tip: “The tee shot looks narrow,  but once passed the oak trees the fairway opens out. A good line from the tee is the bunker in front of the green. A good drive will leave a pitch shot of 100 yards or less. The green is longer than it looks, so be aggressive with your approach.”

Hole 3

Par 3

S.I. 16

Our Golf Professional tip: “The tee shot needs to be accurate, as missing the green right or left leaves a difficult chip shot. Take note of the pin position, as there is a bowl in the front left of the green.”

Hole 4

Par 5

S.I. 6

Our Golf Professional tip: “The first of four par fives, it is uphill and normally into the wind, so plays long. Swing smooth!!  The fairway is wide, but take care as the rough is thick and generally, that will lead to a bogey. The second shot is best played to the right-hand side of the fairway missing the fairway bunkers on the left. Careful with the pitch shot as the green has two levels, left and right.”

Hole 5

Par 4

S.I. 10

Our Golf Professional tip: “Depending how far you hit,  the fairway bunkers can be carried,  leaving a clear shot to the green. The second shot plays a little longer than it looks, so be committed to your shot.”

Hole 6

Par 4

S.I. 12

Our Golf Professional tip: “One of the feature holes on the course. It requires an accurate tee shot to the right side of the fairway avoiding the water hazard on the left. The distance off the tee is not too important, as it doesn’t affect the length of the second shot too much, with the green being angled at 45 degrees to the fairway.”

Hole 7

Par 4

S.I. 2

Our Golf Professional tip: “This hole has two main options. The shorter hitters may decide to play down the right side of the fairway, and play the hole as a par 5. The other option is to take on the ditch,  playing to the other fairway, making the second shot much easier. The green is slightly above the fairway, so do not be afraid to be firm with the shot.”

Hole 8

Par 3

Our Golf Professional tip: “The green is wide but not deep, so be sure you have the correct distance. A shot short or long, will leave a tough bunker or chip shot to secure the par.”

Hole 9

Par 5

S.I. 4

Our Golf Professional tip: “Another strong par five. The perfect shot line is close to the oak tree on the right of the fairway. Depending on the drive, the second shot may be laid up short of the ditch, which is 110 yards short of the green .The  brave may try to carry it ,leaving an easier pitch to the green.”

Hole 10

Par 4

S.I. 3

Our Golf Professional tip: “A tough hole with penalty on the left and bunkers on the right. Pick your best club to hit the fairway. The green is well protected by bunkers front, left and right. A high shot is required to hold the green.”

Hole 11

Par 4

S.I. 5

Our Golf Professional tip: “Another innocuous looking hole fraught with fairway bunkers. The  longer hitters may clear them but for the average player stay as far left as you can, to open up the green which slopes from back to front.”

Hole 12

Par 3

Our Golf Professional tip: “A fabulous par three, and very challenging. The water hazard runs parallel down the right side, and the bunkers there ready to punish a wayward shot. Always Club up if unsure what to take.”

Hole 13

Par 5

S.I. 7

Our Golf Professional tip: “The hole may look daunting,  but it is a birdie opportunity, if the drive is 240 yards or more. The second shot is a judgment call, to carry the bunkers on the right and left to go for the green , or to lay up, and make it a three shotter. Your choice!”

Hole 14

Par 4

S.I. 15

Our Golf Professional tip: “The big hitters may go directly at the green, but there are a lot of hazards that come into play. A simple par if you play to the middle of the fairway but ensure the pitch shot is on the left side of the green so as to avoid the bowl on the right.”

Hole 15

Par 4

S.I. 1

Our Golf Professional tip: “Knowing your distances from the tee will help you drive as close as you can to the lateral hazard. Stay right of the tree in the fairway to have the easiest approach to the green. It is well guarded by a water hazard and bunker on the right and slopes from back to front.”

Hole 16

Par 3

S.I. 17

Our Golf Professional tip: “Often said to be a simple hole. Take care as the water runs in front, to the left and behind the green. It may look a simple shot, but pay attention to the wind direction as that could bring the trouble into play.”

Hole 17

Par 4

S.I. 11

Our Golf Professional tip: “This is the signature hole on the course. A great risk and reward one. Long hitters can attack the green from the tee, but the carry is a minimum of 250 yards.  If you prefer to play safe, aim at the hotel leaving about a 130 yard shot to the sloping green.”

Hole 18

Par 5

S.I. 9

Our Golf Professional tip: “A strong and tough finishing hole. Play the hole where the tee box is aiming ,down the left side. Leaving you a view of the green.  The green is elevated, so choose one more club than you think you need. Playing as three shots a birdie is still available, but ensure your third shot carries the deep green side bunkers.”
