This month, we’re looking at one of our more unusual treatments. Hopi Ear Candles have their origin in the centuries-old culture of the Hopi Indians and have been used in naturopathy for decades. We asked Julie-Anne, Spa Manager, to tell us a little more as this is part of our July me-time spa offer.

What is the Hopi Ear Candle?

The Hopi Ear Candle is a relaxing and non-invasive treatment.‚ The candles used during the treatment are hollow tubes made of cotton, soaked in beeswax, honey, sage and camomile. When lit, these candle acts like a chimney, causing the warm air inside it to rise and creating a vacuum at the bottom. This vacuum gently stimulates the ear, facilitating the natural removal of excess wax and impurities. A little warmth is felt, and hissing and crackling noises are heard, with a little popping. Most people say that it is a very pleasant experience!

What benefits does it give me?

Hopi candles can be used for many conditions including deafness caused by excess wax, congested sinuses, irritation in the ears, ringing or noises in the ears, tinnitus, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraines. The immediate‚ effects can be an improvement in hearing and sense of smell.

How often should I have this treatment?

The treatment can be performed weekly and is ideal when a period of relaxation is required.‚ In most cases, the treatment is extremely soothing and relaxing, leaving the patient with a sense of well-being and reduced pressure in the ears or head.
