29th February is a day we see just once every four years and on these special Leap Years, traditions and legends surround that elusive extra day. One of the most well known is the opportunity for women to take matters into their own hands and get down on one knee.
Stories surrounding this tradition begin in Ireland where legend says that St Brigid, after complaining to St Patrick about women having to‚ wait too long for a proposal, negotiated the rights to leap year proposals. It is then speculated that Brigid immediately proposed to Patrick which he rejected ‘kindly’ with a silk gown. More tales come from Scotland where a‚ decree was allegedly made allowing‚ leap year proposals for women. Doubts have been cast on this – as Queen Margaret who passed the decree was said to have only been five at the time. However, regardless of your gender, the leap year proposal tradition cements February as the month of love following Valentine’s Day.
