On the 15th to the 17th September, Great Britain & Ireland beat America to win the 2017 PGA Cup in breathtaking style at Foxhills Resort in Surrey. One of the match winning heroes was Carden Park’s very own golf pro and proud Welshman Garry Houston.

We caught up with Garry to talk about his list of recent successes, including the astounding victory in Surrey as well as his role and future events at Carden Park.

So Garry, many congratulations on winning the PGA Cup. How does it feel to be part of that trophy winning team?

“It feels amazing. It was a phenomenal week and exceeded all expectations! I made a lot of good friends on the way, including those on the American team. From the captain down to the caddies, everyone pulled their weight to record a fantastic victory. My caddy for the tournament was Ian Rowlands from our golf shop who has helped me many times before and it was great to have somebody next to me who I knew and trusted throughout the weekend”.

Tell us all about the victory. Was it all as smooth as it seemed?

“It was anything but to be honest, however that made it even more exciting. The first session started so badly but then we turned it around and gained a small lead going into the singles, where I was drawn out to play Omar Uresti, the American teams most famous name. By our tee off on the 10th, I heard we had already won, so that alleviated a lot of pressure on me. In the end though, Omar and I ended up halving the round but it would have been nice to beat him”.

What happened after the competition? Did you give yourself some time off?

“I did but not in the way I would have wanted to. Unfortunately after the tournament, I damaged my ligaments and only played for the first time after my injury last week at The Invitational Pro-Am in Quinta do Lago, Portugal. I finished in the top 15 which was miraculous, considering the tough time I’d had since Surrey.  Next, I’ve got the proud honour of captaining a three man Wales team at the 2017 International Team Championship in Costa Navarino, Greece from the 22nd to the 25th November, which also brings the curtain down on our golfing season. We came 5th in Turkey last year and we are very confident of bettering that this time around”.

And when will the new season start again?

“After a lot of practising and much needed downtime, I will be defending the World Pro Am title in early February which I won last year in South Africa. That was such a fantastic experience. The company was good and the added bonuses of doing once in a lifetime opportunities like safariing  was unbelievable. This time, it’s in Spain and I can’t wait! Then, it’s on to the start of the domestic trophies in March and April time. It’s a non-stop round of golf but it’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing”.

What about your role at Carden? Any developments you can tell us about?

“We have so many things in the pipeline here. That’s why I love this place. There’s always something happening! Now that the golf season is finishing, we have done a bit of maintenance on the courses as that’s essential in going forward and we want the greens to be in tip top condition for our guests going into next year. The Cheshire course is still looking superb though, even though the bad weather is unfortunately now upon us. That’s such a great credit to our green-keeping team. Oh and not forgetting that we have also got a new chipping area by The Clubhouse which is going to be great! There’s a few other things I’ve got in mind, which we are hoping to announce soon. So all I can say is to watch this space.”

Garry loves it at Carden Park. Do you? If so, why not combine your luxurious stay with two rounds on both of our award winning golf courses? The perfect Winter Break for you and your golfing pals this Christmas.
