It’s time to sweat it out! Summer is a great time to get outside and have fun so we asked Personal Trainer Terry Samuels for his best summer fitness tips to help you to get the most out of your workouts this‚ season.
Drink lots of water! It’s even more important to stay hydrated in the summer months as sweating in the heat – even during water-based exercises like swimming – can cause you to lose fluids more rapidly. Increase the amount you drink around two hours before you exercise and make sure to continue after your workout to help your muscles recover.
Vary your workouts.‚ One of the best things about the summer is how easy‚ it is to vary your exercise and take advantage of the (hopefully!) better weather. Rather than walking on a treadmill, I love to‚ bike ride or hike through the countryside.
Find a fitness buddy. Having somebody to exercise with – whether it’s a class or running the same route – is great for extra motivation! The combination of accountability (think spurring each other on through the slumps) and socialising works fantastically to keep you motivated. Personal training is an extension of this for if you want a greater insight into fitness and a personalised programme.
Protect yourself.‚ If you do exercise outdoors, apply sunscreen and don’t forget to stretch – your muscles still need warming up despite the heat!
Don’t skip leg day!‚ Changing up your workouts is key to getting fit and toning your entire body. HIIT (high intensity interval training) and body weight exercises need no equipment and are fantastic for increasing your fitness quickly.
