It’s summer and although we should be out playing and taking advantage of the rare British sun, it’s also a time where we need to take care of ourselves, in order to prevent sunburn and other sun related illnesses.

At Carden Park, we promote a full ESPA range, some of which help keep us safe in the hottest of weather. Products like Optimal Skin Pro Defence and the Naturally Radiant Tinted Moisturiser have a sun protection factor of 15.

Here are our top tips to a protected yet enjoyable summer:

Wear sun-cream every day

It’s extremely important that we wear sun-cream every day, which are a suitable factor for our needs. If your skin is paler, you will need a higher factor. However, if you have a darker skin, still be careful in the sun! Reapply every two hours and one hour after you’ve been in water or sweating. As well as this, you must be prepared for any summer weather. Even if it is cloudy and it doesn’t seem the sun is shining, the heat may still be strong coming through the clouds and we need to be ready for this.

Dress yourself appropriately

It may be tempting to wear a t shirt and shorts for the duration of summer, but also try to wear darker clothing every so often so as to reflect the suns rays.  Think about wearing long sleeved t shirts and long trousers too, when appropriate. This will prevent your bare skin from becoming too red and  burnt. If you’re feeling extra careful, we recommend that you look out for clothes that consist of special sun-protective materials.

Accessorize yourself

They may look cool but sunglasses and baseball caps go a long way to protecting your eyes, face, neck, and ears from the sun. Look for sunglasses that are not only comfortable but have UV protection. Bear in mind however that the bigger the lenses, the more of your eyes, eyelids, and surrounding skin will be covered.

Think of shade as well as sun

Although it’s tempting to spend all day in the sun, we have to be careful that we aren’t in the complete focus of the sun’s intense rays. The sun in summer is strongest between 10am and 4pm, so try and limit yourself sunbathing during these times and spend some time in the shade too. Your body will certainly thank you in the long term.

Be careful if you’re taking medication

If you’re taking medicines, you need to be extra cautious during the hot summer months. Check the label on your packet carefully or consult with your GP on the best course of action for sunbathing with prescription drugs.
