In the picturesque surroundings of Carden Park’s Championship Cheshire Golf Course, something extraordinary happened on the first day of the 2024 European Junior Golf Competition. Seven-year-old Bobby Harry, a young golfer who lives on the Wirral, made history with a feat that left onlookers and fellow competitors in awe – a hole-in-one on the very first match of the tournament.
This prestigious competition, which draws young golfers aged 4 to 17 from all over the UK, has seen its share of remarkable moments. But Bobby’s achievement stands out not just for his age, but for the sheer rarity of the event. In its 25-year history, the European Junior Golf Tour has only witnessed three previous hole-in-ones, with Bobby’s being the first in several years.
The moment unfolded on the Cheshire Golf Course’s ladies’ tee situated 135 yards from the flag. Using a 3-wood, Bobby struck the ball with precision, sending it soaring toward the flag. As it approached the brow of the hill, those watching, including his proud parents, held their breath. The ball rolled with perfect momentum, and to everyone’s astonishment, dropped straight into the hole. Not only had Bobby accomplished the rare feat of a hole-in-one, but given the par-4 nature of the hole for juniors, he had achieved an albatross—a remarkable three under par.
Bobby’s caddy for the day was none other than his father, who along with Bobby’s mum, beamed with pride as they witnessed this incredible moment. For perspective, the odds of hitting a hole-in-one are about 1 in 12,500 for professional adult golfers, making Bobby’s accomplishment all the more spectacular.
Despite this historic shot, Bobby didn’t take home the win in his category on day one, highlighting the incredible talent of the young golfers competing this year. The European Junior Golf Tour continues to be a platform where the future stars of the sport hone their skills and make their mark.
David Llewellyn, Carden Park’s Executive Golf Professional, expressed his amazement at the achievement, saying:
“This is an incredible feat for any golfer, let alone someone who is just 7 years old. To achieve this is absolutely unbelievable, especially in a proper professional competition. It must have set some sort of record. After the match, Bobby and I shared a light moment where I told him that in my 50-year golfing career, I’ve only managed two hole-in-ones. He jokingly replied, ‘Only two?’ He has a bright future ahead of him.”
Roger Shutt, a professional golfer with over 50 years of experience and a passionate advocate for junior golf, who organizes the event, said:
“Bobby managed to beat the odds that even professional adult golfers face, making this a very unique achievement. What makes it even more impressive is that, in the past, when we’ve seen similar feats on our tours, the juniors were usually twice his age. For a 7-year-old, this was a long hole, and to get the distance he did means he was performing at maximum capacity. Honestly, even just hitting the green would have been a remarkable accomplishment.
But beyond his talent, Bobby is an amazing person who always seems to have a smile on his face. Despite this incredible achievement, he wasn’t overwhelmed by it. On the second day, he took everything in his stride, playing another fantastic round without letting the moment get to him. It’s clear that Bobby has both the skill and the character to go far in this sport.”
