An example of Lowry’s interest in the way the Industrial Revolution changed the urban and rural landscape of Britain in the Victorian Era. There are recurring elements such as the fences around countryside farms from around Lancashire that later reappear in his more famous paintings of industrialist urban scenery, such as River Scene from 1935.

Station Approach – Laurence Stephen Lowry

The Three Cats, Aslow – Laurence Stephen Lowry

Lowry was interested in depicting working class life in the industrial towns in the North East of England and The Three Cats Alstow is a lively example of this. Lowry injected humour into many of his street scenes by depicting a vast range of people that are spread across the entire composition. We can see a man who has fallen over onto the road, a parent chasing their young child, some others chasing a dog and even some figures who lie on the ground against the terraced houses.

Winter in Broughton – Laurence Stephen Lowry

Lowry gives the impression of a winter scene by rendering the trees without leaves, depicting the figures in their winter coats and showing the ground to be covered with deep snow. This print is representative of Lowry’s stylised realism in the way that the scene does not show the effects of weather in the sky or landscape and the figures do not cast any shadows.
